Inside Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek — a Universes Beyond crossover celebrating 60 years of Trek, built in collaboration with CBS.
Trek
Magic: The Gathering has crossed paths with superheroes, hobbits, and pirates in recent years, but its next Universes Beyond destination is deep space. Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek releases November 13, 2026, timed to the franchise’s 60th anniversary and built in direct collaboration with CBS. It’s the 115th Standard expansion, and unlike some past crossovers, this one isn’t limited to a single era — it pulls characters, starships, and storylines from across the entire history of Trek, from The Original Series through Strange New Worlds.
Prerelease events run November 6 through 12, with the full worldwide tabletop release on November 13. The main set carries code TRK, with a dedicated Commander-only set (TRC) and a Stardates supplemental set (SDS) launching alongside it. Here’s what’s been confirmed so far.
Kirk and Janeway lead the first wave
The opening wave of previews put two captains front and center, and both are landing as mythic rarity.
Further previews are expected to ramp up through October, roughly three to four weeks ahead of release, in line with how recent sets have staged their spoiler seasons.
Three new keywords, built for the setting
Rather than bolting generic mechanics onto Trek characters, the design team built new keywords specifically around Star Trek concepts.
Assimilate puts a creature card under the battlefield, where it becomes a Borg artifact creature. Face a Dilemma has players choose between two abilities. Federation checks how many non-Borg creatures a player controls before triggering certain effects. Spacecraft and the returning station keyword — first seen in Edge of Eternities — are also back, with the U.S.S. Enterprise-D headlining that category.
Sagas for iconic episodes, counters for the Federation
As with most Universes Beyond sets, Saga enchantments are being used to represent iconic Star Trek storylines and episodes rather than original Magic lore. The set also introduces promotion counters, a new counter type tied into the Starfleet rank progression running through the set’s flavor.
Four precons, Scene Boxes, and a Collector’s Edition
Star Trek ships in Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, and four separate Commander decks, each also available in a premium Collector’s Edition. Dedicated Scene Boxes are exclusive to this set, wrapping Play Boosters in packaging that forms a panoramic Star Trek scene across the sealed boxes when displayed together — a treatment similar to the panorama boxes seen in recent Tolkien releases.
Legality splits by product: cards in the main TRK set are Standard legal, while Commander-only TRC cards and Stardates SDS cards are legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage, but not Standard.
A long time coming
The set was first announced at MagicCon: Atlanta in 2025, with elements previewed the following year at STLV: Trek to Vegas, a convention Wizards of the Coast sponsored in August 2026. It lands as part of a broader 2026 slate that also brings Magic back to Lorwyn and Strixhaven, alongside continuing Marvel and Final Fantasy crossovers — making Star Trek one of several major swings in what’s shaping up to be one of the busiest years in the game’s history.
